Professional contexts 2 – Pricing Structure, web text

In this session, we focused on pricing structure, talked through different things on website pages and a head of start on web text. The pricing structure followed on working out the day rate.

Taking packshot photography for example, packshot photography, also known as product photography and e-commerce photography is generally a still image but can also be a moving image/video of a product for commercial reasons. We also imagined if shooting a series of packshot how long would take as whole shooing process and how many images are going to be taken, 4 items in 4 colour which 16 single shoots  in total, but if client request to use model, that would be more complicated which you would spend extra time looking the studio or outside place, probably you would need some time to concertation, retouching with client, doing research and spend some time on finding the right light. Back to the example of pack shot, if the detail is needed so there would be front shoot, 2 sides of shoot, one back, one detail shoot and model shoot (possibly not shooting in the same day), ending up you might take 85 images in total, if adding the time as editing, the example of pack shot would take approximately 30 hours.

Mainly I looked at some packshot photography pricing which would be relevant to my future career. The three websites I searched where The Packshot People, Photography Firm and Keylight Studio, and I found that the pricing structure shown on Photography Firm was more reasonable as it clear describes which helps clients to understand what they could offer. Keylight Studio has got an innovative idea of packshot create photography which I thought was odd, I would sorry to say but the image as an example look hilarious and massive, the creative way of background is stronger than the product. Apart from that when we were having the session, talking about how many times on photographing product, commercial photography or something similar

There were two products of pack shot photography which came into my head. I think you could see how they pay attention on their products which contents of images are the most complicated I guess.

First one is a phone case, normally we would use white background, photographing three images of front, back and side, as you can see, it literally has 12 pictures including details and each colour of images. But it obviously is studio image, because it’s got props, probably would get time to find right way to place it unless the photographer has informed the product should including some pros, but it’s not the big product like bicycle, so I assume it would not take too long. I guess 12 images need to take less than one and a half hour.

Nevertheless, the next one would be difficult, which I selected the skirt as example and it's got the model shoot, both outside and inside image, as well as the image of product itself, they’ve got 25 images due to various colour of skirts, but when you scroll down, it shows more example images of model shoots, we think they’ve got more than 40 images in total and ending up showing 30 at least. This could be spend whole day shooting including editing.

From my point of view, if familiar the way with the product against pure white background, it could work  much quicker, yet with model, which might prepare to think about what the composition costumers want. And those enquiries should bring to the table when meeting clients, so it would not cause troubles and photographing again. For the required skill to improve so far, I think I need to develop the way against white background, at the moment I know how to deal with natural light in certain way but still need to practice more on creating purely white background when shooting products.
