Exhibition: OUR LAND, YOUR STORIES – In Memory of Po-Lin Chi
The purpose of exhibition is in remembrance of Po-Lin Chi, Chi was a Taiwanese documentary filmmaker, photographer as well as environmentalist. He started doing aerial photography after he finished the commission of shooting motorway, he was interested in environment issue and coming across making a film after shooting over 300 thousand aerial images, he started to feel making a film could exactly show the issue which Taiwanese should face it seriously, moreover, he thought there were numerous beautiful landscapes which should be shown to the world.
The film called Beyond Beauty - TAIWAN FROM ABOVE was successful released, regarding full of documentation as the bird’s view, not only describing how the island is splendid, but also pointing out the environmental issues, such as pollution and deforestation, involving both happiness and sadness. After two days of announcing filming the second of Beyond Beauty – Taiwan From Above, he died in a helicopter crash on June 2017.
The exhibition was held after months he died. It was the shame that visitors were not allowed to take photographs due to the copyright. I am not sure how many Taiwanese photographers who do the same thing as him, but I can tell he definitely has contributed his entire life to show our land in a different point of view. None of people like him always think of what he can do for his country, it inspires me which I should start looking at the place where I grow up as well as how to use camera as my tool to tell the narrative, observing the relationship between this beautiful island and me. I think it would take time to explore but I believe it is worth to do, through the idea, it might be the way of understanding myself more.
